Setup

A black mask around your screen will improve picture quality and sharpness

Although it doesn't really improves the picture, the perception seems to be more sharp when the picture is properly masked. Also it makes that your screen is a screen, not 'just-another-white-surface'.

NEVER put bright and light colors near the screen.

This will distract you from the movie itself. Don't even think about putting a movie poster near the screen!

Be aware of corners

Also light even colors give problems, especially in corners. Light comming from light parts of the screen can bounces back again to other parts of the screen when the other wall of the corner has a light color. This completely ruins the projection, since dark parts of the picture are not visible anymore.
